Keeping You Informed

Almost all of us have been faced with making a purchase without enough information about the product. Ever had an auto mechanic tell you that your car’s “Flux Capacitor” was broken and needed replacement, usually for an astronomical fee?

At NGD we want our customers to have an understanding of WHY a repair needs to be performed. An informed customer is one who feels confident in their purchase. Here is a basic overview of what goes into a safely and efficiently operating garage door system. We call it a SYSTEM because no one part can function well without the others.

Torsion Spring Doors
Torsion Spring systems are typically installed on garage doors that are 16 feet in width. The diagram below illustrates a standard single or double torsion spring door setup.

Extension Spring Doors
Extension Spring systems are typically installed on garage doors that are 8 feet in width. The diagram below illustrates a standard extension spring door setup.

Tech Tips Keep Your Garage Door Safe and Sound

Check your extension spring door carefully to ensure the springs are either enclosed by a metal tube, use a safety containment cable, or both. Extension spring doors incorporate a safety containment cable which prevents a snapping spring from flying free and causing injury or damage. Torsion spring doors use a spring that is installed around the torsion tube so that it cannot snap free and cause damage or injury.

Garage door bottom brackets are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury if deliberately or accidentally loosened or removed by someone inexperienced in garage door installation or maintenance.

Manual winding of a torsion spring during installation or adjustment is extremely difficult and potentially dangerous. Torsion spring doors should only be installed by a trained professional.

A faulty or improperly adjusted reversing mechanism on your garage door opener could cause damage to your car or even injure a child or pet that inadvertently gets caught in the way of the closing door.

Your garage door is probably the largest moving part in your home and is typically used every day. Over time, parts can wear out and break, creating potential safety hazards. Although there are some light maintenance duties and inspections you can perform yourself, industry experts recommend that you have your garage door professionally serviced at least once a year to ensure maximum safety and to increase the life of your door.
